Double Exposure of the Marconi Room on the Titanic Repaired!

The before repair picture above is the un- cropped double exposure taken by amateur photographer Father Francis Browne on April, 12th, 1912 and was just one of a good number of photos taken on his journey from Liverpool, where he was studying to become a Catholic priest. From Liverpool he would travel by rail to Southampton station in London, the location of the Titanic to embark on his short trip via the Titanic from Southampton to Cherbourg, France, to pick up mail and passengers, then on to Queenstown, Ireland where he was to dis-embark. These are all of the photos, in the hyperlink, I am aware of Browne’s trip from Liverpool, to Southampton, to Cherbourg, France, to Queenstown, Ireland: Here: FBP As can be seen, what appears to be a Fleming valve is mounted on the wall in a Marconi device to the left of the operator. Harold Bride is the operator that is blocking sight of the Marconi equipment in front of him but that may or may not include a Fleming valve. At the point this picture was taken, Bride was probably sending and receiving passengers’ messages without the use of a valve?

Father Browne was given a first class ticket onboard the Titanic by his uncle, Robert Browne, along with a 1911 Kodak Vest-Pocket camera and film. This started Browne on his life-long passion of photography, some 42,000 in total on various subjects. At some point, not clear when, Kodak received at least the Titanic photos and in exchange gave Browne free film for life, probably early on.

I am willing to share my entire huge Titanic archive upon request or you can asseble your own archive. All the photos can be purchased from Amazon and at other places.

Keep in mind that my daughter, Libby Symons, created this using Photo Shop and AI and is the only repair of Browne’s double exposure picture known to date, You can contact Libby by clicking on the “Syfer Group” if so inclined.

I added my website’s watermark but that is not to say I have a copyright. Not certain anyone can but I did capture these photo’s while they were in the public realm on Father Browne.com and give full credit to his family.

The 2 CG renderings above were done by Parks Stevenson after the 2nd dive and look at the Marconi Radio room courtesy of James Cameron dives on same. Thiis is only a best guess by Parks and contains some parts of the radio room on the Titanic’s sister ship, the Olympic. Full credit to Parks and James for the only possible way to get some of the info in this article.

See much more on this subject in AWA Review, Vol. 15, 2002.
