Making Wireless History with DeForest

Making Wireless History with DeForest

I submitted a series of articles written by Frank Butler to Lud Sibley while he was the editor and creator of the TCA magazines. While there were too many pages at 27 to include in a mag, I suggested a special publication with a .PDF on a DVD. It was never done. However, I provided our groups.io with this same series of articles in March, 2020. An update with a bit of new info will be done in this article.

Frank Butler wrote a series of 3 articles in Radio Broadcast magazine starting in December, 1924, January, 1925, and March, 1925 all the while being the chief assistant to Lee DeForest. The article speaks for itself with a unique perspective of a man whom Lee DeForest called “My Old Standby”

I assume Tyne scanned these pages from Radio Broadcast at some point and I re-scanned them at Jerry Vanicek’s place during a visit. It seems Tyne scanned pictures 1, and 2 above to show the month and year they appeared so this is just the manner in which he scanned them.

Back in Dec, 2025, I purchased a hardcover book called “The Standby: A Wireless Journey Toward the Birth of Radio”. It was reviewed by Eric Wenass in the latest AWA Journal. Thanks to Eric for that. See the journal for that review. While I usually do not recommend books, this is an exception. The picture to the left shows the cover.
